Pink Bread Mold (Neurospora)

Neurospora spp.

Extremely aggressive contaminant that spreads faster than almost any other mold. Clouds of airborne spores.

What It Looks Like

Bright orange or pink fluffy growth, spreads explosively fast, clouds of spores

Recommended Action

URGENT. Do not open container. Orange spores will contaminate entire room. Bag immediately and dispose outside. May need to decontaminate entire grow space.

How to Identify

Common Causes
  • Contaminated grains or substrate
  • Working in contaminated environment
  • Previous neurospora outbreak not fully cleaned
  • Poor sterile technique

  • Immediate disposal of any outbreak
  • Full decontamination if encountered
